MTG Content Creators Awards and Reality

Recent events have forced some good changes for the nomination process.  Nominations continue to flow in.  At last count we were approaching 500.  Your enthusiasm for the program is inspiring.

I have received many messages in the last week.  Most were of encouragement, and I sincerely appreciate it.  It steels my resolve to craft the awards into something that the community as a whole can enjoy.

I have also received advice on who I should promptly remove from the nominee list.  I also appreciate those who took the time to contact me with this information.  It has helped me better define the bounds of these awards.

The rules, as stated on the MTGCCA website, defer much of my decision making to the Wizards of the Coast Code of Conduct. (HERE)

The most pertinent passages are quoted below:

-Do not use, post, distribute or link to obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit, graphically or gratuitously violent, derogatory, demeaning, malicious, defamatory, abusive, offensive, hateful or discriminatory language or content. This includes “masking” language by using alternative characters/spelling /spacing to get around profanity filters or claims of profanity filter “testing”.

-Do not harass, bully, threaten, harm or cause discomfort for other persons, including any other members. For example: Use of hate speech or racial, ethnic, sexist, homophobic or religious slurs; Harassment of a specific person (repeated flaming, personal attacks or posting their private information); Trolling or baiting the community in general with inflammatory statements, such as ones designed to elicit a negative response from the community; or Posting or otherwise disclosing any personal or private information of another person, or any confidential information pertaining to a business, without consent.

-Do not promote, plan, glorify or engage in any illegal activity or otherwise make available content that would encourage or provide instructions for an illegal activity. These topics include crimes relating to drugs, drug paraphernalia, rape, solicitation of a minor, computer hacking, counterfeiting and fraud.

These are the rules that I can use to remove people from the awards.  Several nominees are currently under review for violations of these statutes.

Some of the information I have received, which was well-intended, was little more than a recommendation to remove somebody and a general description of 'sketchy behavior'.  When I pressed for more information, I received only descriptions of somebody who, at most, was not liked.

The limitations of what I am willing to do are as follows.  I will remove a nominee for violations of the code of conduct.  I will remove a nominee if they ask to be removed.  I will remove a nominee whose participation in the awards, while not in violation of the code of conduct, would detract from the overall goal of the awards.

The goal of the awards is to celebrate Magic: the Gathering content creators big and small.  This awards program is designed to be safe for any age to participate.

What I won't do is discriminate against nominees based on a person's age, disability, gender, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, genetic makeup, and any other personal characteristics.  Nor will I remove a nominee based on their political affiliation, unless that affiliation results in acts that are in violation of the code of conduct.  I won't remove a nominee as a retaliation for exercising freedom of speech unless that language is in violation of the code of conduct or falls into one of the other categories for removal.  I won't remove a nominee as a form of censure.  And I won't remove a nominee if they happen to be friends with somebody who is in violation of the code of conduct.

DCI bans are automatic removals.

If you are going to recommend somebody for removal, these are the grounds which can be used to justify that removal.

There has to be a line.  This is it.

That being said, remember...you are the ones with the power to nominate.  I can only remove names, but you can actually put names on the list.  By exercising your right to nominate content creators, you can control who makes it onto the ballot.  Only the top 6 nominees make it to the ballot.

ONLY THE TOP 6.

Most of the people who have contacted me demanding removals haven't even nominated anyone.  Just put another name on the list.  Those names will add up.  Nominate HERE.

Your voice counts.

I will continue to screen nominees in accordance with these rules.
