Dominaria Brewing-Top Cards I'm Most Anxious to Brew With
After reading through the entire Dominaria library, I have to say that I'm extremely excited to get started deckbuilding. My excitement extends from Standard to Modern and especially Brawl.
But I wanted to consolidate a list of cards that I'm excited to build with, mostly because I want to preserve this excitement for a few months and reopen this article to see what I haven't used yet. I did this with a previous set by calling out 'pairings' of cards that I thought would work well together.
This list is going to primarily focus on jankiness. I don't really want to point out cards that are obvious. "So, you think the 7/6 monster with trample and hexproof is going to be good? Nice call Captain Obvious." That's not this article.
Let's have some fun here. I'll try to keep it to the top 3 in each color, but no promises.
White:
There are many ways you can cast this, then empty your opponent's graveyard, reaping the II and III benefits for yourself.
Also, I think there is some janky combo with The Mending of Dominaria that can be made to work. Maybe turn 5 Mending, turn 6 Fall of Thran, turn 7 get all lands back and cast and sacrifice Sentinel Totem.
I don't see the high cost being a problem, especially with epic ramp creature Llanowar Elves back in Standard. Anyway, we're not talking about pro-tour decks here...we're talking about fun. Moving onto our second white card...Urza's Ruinous Blast.
I think this will become a must have card in Brawl, but I'd like to get it into Standard. After all, there are plenty of legendary creatures in the format. That being said, I have to jump ahead to the green cards really quick, because if you're going to play Urza's Ruinous Blast, you might also want to have Kamahl's Druidic Vow in the deck.
This is pretty close to being one of my favorites of the set. The sheer randomness of what you could get is fantastic. I think something beautiful could be made from this one card. It really looks like white is pairing with green really well in this set, but my third white card settles more toward a pairing with black.
While this card isn't too exciting, I am only anxious to use it because of all the zero-cost artifacts in the format. Mox Amber and Ornithopter, add Hope of Ghirapur (1CMC), maybe a dash of Favorable Winds. You get the idea. This doesn't have to be a 2/2 for 4 waste of space, it can be a cool recycling center for 3 mana creatures.
Moving onto Blue:
I have not been shy about saying how much I like Merfolk Trickster. It's a Merfolk...it's a Wizard...it's pure beauty in my eyes. This is one of those many bears with upside that the community is talking about, but I think this one's upside will outlive its life in Standard. It's no Snapcaster Mage, but it does something elegant and aggressive that can harass an opponent over and over again.
Double trigger! Wizards will be my first deck build for Dominaria, and it is mainly because of this card. It wants me to put it on the battlefield with Panharmonicon. It also wants me to play it with Dire Fleet Ravager. It wants me to play it with Riverwise Augur or Silvergill Adept or Trophy Mage or, my personal favorite, Storm Fleet Pyromancer. If you're wondering what a Storm Fleet Pyromancer is...don't worry, it's not used very much, but I see potential here.
This one makes a good pairing with Adanto Vanguard, Bomat Courier, and especially Electrostatic Pummeler. You swing in as a 1/1 unblockable, then pump. One card that I think would go impeccably well with this is Ovalchase Dragster.
This is just plain fun. You've got 6 turns to dump as many artifacts onto the battlefield as possible. If one of those is a Chief of the Foundry...you're cooking with gas. I'm going to see how this works in my Construct Tribal deck, but I really want t do something extremely janky with this. I'm sure it will involve Tezzeret.
Onto green:
We talked about Mending. I think it has possibilities for graveyard synergies as well as Sylvan Awakening. Do some self-milling, focusing on getting lands into the graveyard, then get them all back , shuffle your graveyard into your library and cast Sylvan Awakening.
Add Radiant Destiny to it and it changes from fun to funner.
This one was already discussed, but I'm so excited to brew with it, I put it up again.
Black:
Chainer's Torment is just a straight up bad idea. But that makes me want to play it that much more.
Maybe I put it with a bunch of lifelinkers and create the biggest Nightmare Horror creature ever (that dies to Fatal Push).
Josu Vess, Lich Knight...if I can get this to go off, I will be amazed and content.
Lich's Mastery...so this has to be the "I dare you to try and win with this card" card of the century. But I promise you, I will make a deck featuring this card as its primary win condition.
Torgaar, Famine Incarnate has that Hollow One feel to it. You can cheat it out early. I'm pairing this with Dire Fleet Ravager, some reincarnation and lifelink. I'll name the deck Half n Half because it sounds cool.
Red:
Maybe this one....
Or maybe this one....
That's about it...
Colorless:
Zacama, Nicol Bolas, Razaketh, etc...I want to play them all early with Thran Temporal Gateway.
I like the idea of bouncing this equipment from creature to creature. It just seems funny...which is perfect criteria for building a deck around something.
MMMMMMMMMM. Helm of the Host...I almost can't say it. I'm going to stick this expensive, hard to play card in so many decks in the hopes of being able to build armies of Rhonas the Indomitable, which (next to Combat Celebrant) is one of the best cards to play with this. I want Gonti and Hazoret and Oketra armies! I want Admiral Beckett Brass to multiply and start stealing everything on the board. I want to put it on Tezimoc because sometimes I feel like being really mean. I want to cheat out Tishana, Voice of Thunder early with Forebear's Blade (above) and duplicate it until my library is just about empty.
Finally...I must throw out the planeswalker that I am most anxious to play with. I bet you're thinking Karn, but I see Karn as a solid commodity. Not specifically as janky as...
PS (update 4/16/18 from Reddit/magicdeckbuilding)
I really needed to add this to the list. This is a straight copy and past from reddit (magicdeckbuilding) in a reply to this post. It was written by FigBits

I'm thinking turn 2 Naban, followed by a turn 3 Ahn-Crop Crasher, turn 4 Panharmonicon, swing in on turn five, exert Ahn-Crop, cast Storm Fleet Pyromancer, it triggers 3 times. It's not the most efficient use of mana, but just for the chance to use Storm Fleet Pyromancer, the shame alone that your opponent feels would be enough.
My second blue card is Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive.
This one makes a good pairing with Adanto Vanguard, Bomat Courier, and especially Electrostatic Pummeler. You swing in as a 1/1 unblockable, then pump. One card that I think would go impeccably well with this is Ovalchase Dragster.
Turn 4, crew and attack for 6 unblockable. I'm definitely going to put these two together. Another couple of ideas could be battle damage trigger cards like:
But, I could go on forever...this card has massive potential. Even if you just populated your deck with tons of 1 toughness creatures. Did I forget to mention Kari Zev? She's got a monkey on her back that could benefit from this as well.
My final blue card is The Antiquities War.
This is just plain fun. You've got 6 turns to dump as many artifacts onto the battlefield as possible. If one of those is a Chief of the Foundry...you're cooking with gas. I want to get it to it's ultimate, but just the first ability is enough for me to try and play a control deck around this card. And it is notable that the -3 ability is fairly twisted.
Overall, I am awaiting eagerly the release of this set so I can get started. It looks like a deck builder's dream. But let me know what you think. By now you can probably tell that I am extremely optimistic and excitable...so I might be a little off center at times when it comes to reality.
